I hate group classes…but fell in love with LIFT Society!

Hi, Coach Conrad here, to tell you my story about how I fell in love with LIFT Society despite hating group classes. Aren’t they for women, anyway?

It’s Valentine’s Day soon, so I figured it was an appropriate time to talk about love and hate.

I’ve been in the fitness industry for over 16 years, and my background is very heavily skewed towards personal training. I specialize in training people with injuries and chronic conditions such as diabetes, osteoporosis, lower back pain, and many more. However, personal training is not cheap, so I wanted to reach more people by offering group classes, and even taught at Orangetheory Fitness. If you want to read more on the cost analysis of small group training, please read one of our previous blogs by Coach Brittany.

That being said, I hate taking group classes myself.

Problem #1: I found many instructors would often yell out cookie-cutter motivational quotes that felt empty, would talk about themselves a lot (nobody is that special!), and would make little effort to give modifications to members who needed them.

Problem #2: Another issue with group classes is that they rely mostly on high-intensity metabolic conditioning or straight-up cardio exercises to get everybody sweating and give the illusion that the class is “hard.” I’ll share a little industry secret with you… if you want to see long-lasting body composition changes, you’re better off lifting heavy weights versus spending your time huffing and puffing through “hard” classes. Check out our blog about lifting myths here.

Problem #3: Not enough weight to build strength. I’m a 6’2″, 200 lbs male with an athletic background. Places like Orangetheory, F45, and Bunda typically only have weights that go up to 40 lbs, no bars, no squat rack, and therefore no real strength training and the ability to progressively overload.

Love at the first rep:

All it took was one class at LIFT Society to realize how special this place is.

  • You get your own squat rack with all the weight that you need: you will get stronger by coming here.

  • All the coaches are very knowledgeable and experienced: new to lifting? These coaches walk the walk and talk the talk.

  • Coaches are all attentive and will give modifications: intimidated by all the squat racks? These coaches will pay attention to you, correct form, and highlight technique.

I’m still mainly a personal trainer at heart, but I wanted to be part of this tribe.

I also fell in love at LIFT Society, so with Valentine’s Day approaching, come to class, get stronger, and maybe you too will find your significant lifter.
